KEY WEST FISHING REPORT - March 5th 2010
The muddled visibility in the waters surrounding the reef has provided excellent conditions for shark fishing lately, attracting plenty of Blacktip Reef Sharks and even the rare Hammerhead Shark. But our own Capt. Bill Wallace managed to guide a client to snagging a rare Mako that surpassed 500 pounds. While chumming off the stern of the Outcast, Bill noticed this monster in the chum slick and swiftly provided his client with a bigger rod and the proper tackle.
With a favorable eastward current off the reef, Tony Miller, the skipper of our boat the Coolwater, decided to fish the color change at about 220 feet. His party was reeling in Blackfins left and right. The occasional Sailfish was also caught.
Although the weather has been a little cold for people, the fish are still biting down in the Keys. But we don't expect the unseasonable weather to last. Sunday and Monday will see pleasant temps in the 70's. Once spring weather like this arrives, the Tarpon begin to become active in Key West Harbor.
Tight lines and trophy trips,
Capt. Chris Garcia
