KEY WEST FISHING REPORT - March 16th 2010

The weather and the water in Key West have really been warming up lately; as a result, the fish have become even more active lately. I've guided our clients to some successful charters lately on the Coolcast. Friday, I led a charter that hit both the reef and the color change offshore in about one hundred and sixty feet of water. At the reef, anglers nabbed their limit of Yellowtail Snapper, ranging up to six and a half pounds. My clients also caught four Kingfish, with the largest weighing thirty-two pounds. We hooked two Sailfish with live bait near the Gulf Stream - one on the kite and one on the flatline - and managed to bring one to the boat. One of my anglers also caught a Blackfin Tuna weighing seventeen pounds.

Now that the weather is warming up, we've also seen the Tarpon become active in Key West Harbor. Today, I guided a successful trip; using cut shrimp boat trash as bait the party took six of eight Tarpon ranging from sixty to one hundred and twenty pounds. From now through the summer, trophy sized Tarpon fishing will be excellent in the Keys.

Good anglin',

Capt. Damon Santelli
