KEY WEST FISHING REPORT - March 30th 2010
Now that the warm temperatures of spring have arrived in Key West, we have witnessed all sorts of activity in the waters of the region. If you like to choose from a selection of fantastic angling options, now is the time to head on down and join our charter captains for a fishing excursion. The action offshore at the color change, where the Gulf Stream approaches the reef, should pick up even more with the rise in temps. Dorado, Blackfins, and Wahoo can be caught where the deepwater currents approach the Keys. April is an excellent time for Sailfish angling, since these lively billfish make their annual migration this time of year. If the winds for any particular day are poor for Atlantic side fishing but would like to catch a large pelagic, you can book a Blackfin Tuna charter in the Gulf. These fish love to swim behind shrimpers awaiting the release of unwanted trash fish.
Closer to shore, we've also been hitting the flats to hook some huge Lemon Sharks and Nurse Sharks. These predators swarm the area this time of year to spawn. At the reefs, wrecks and rockpiles, we have seen plenty of success nabbing Yellowtails, King Mackerel, Amberjacks, Mangrove Snappers, and even the occasional Hammerhead.
This is the season when light tackle fishing for Tarpon really picks up. We've been catching plenty of these beasts, some surpassing one hundred and twenty pounds. Permit has also begun to bite in Key West Harbor.
Good anglin',
Capt. Damon Santelli
