KEY WEST FISHING REPORT - April 9th 2010
We sent several excursions into the Gulf to fish the rock-piles. On our boat the Outcast, Capt. Dan Smith witnessed a client snag a 42 pound Cobia, while I saw one of my group haul in a 32 pound King Mackerel. Bill Wallace headed out to the deeper wrecks on the Atlantic side aboard the Coolwater to fish for plentiful Amberjack and Mutton Snapper.
If you love to fish off the reef for Permit, be sure to join us during the next time the moon is full. They spawn every spring around this time of year. Our captains set up anglers with 15 to 20 pound test on light spinning rods. You'll head south from Key West to fish for these exciting game-fish with green crabs as bait. Anglers on our inshore charters to Key West Harbor have already caught some of these beautifully shiny fish while targeting Tarpon.
This is an excellent time of year to chase after some trophy Tarpon in the deeper channels of the harbor. If you would like an impressive trophy mounted in your den, this is the time of year to snag one of these monsters ranging up to 120 pounds. On Friday, I led a party to snag three Tarpon during a half day trip on the Coolcast.
Looking forward, we should see the winds shift to provide favorable conditions for deep sea fishing south of Key West; this is an excellent time to hunt Sailfish during their spring migration.
Good anglin',
Captain Chris Garcia
