KEY WEST FISHING REPORT - April 16th 2010

The Sailfish migration is now in full swing on the Atlantic side of Key West, Florida; these incredible billfish are swarming in the Gulf Stream waters just a short way off the reef south of the Keys. For the last couple days we have had the misfortune of experiencing 30-knot winds in the Florida Keys, effectively limiting offshore angling until Saturday when the winds subside. Unfortunately, these strong winds arrived at the start of the World Sailfish Championship and only substantial vessels could brave the waves that reached ten feet.  But, even with these difficult conditions, more than 400 Sailfish have been caught already. We anticipate even better Sailfishing Saturday after the winds calm down.

After the winds die down, Sailfish angling at the color change offshore will be excellent. We also anticipate the waters closer to shore will clear up. This clarity should improve inshore fishing for sharks in the flats as well as Tarpon in the harbor. Our own Capt. Wallace had some success leading a charter aboard the Coolwater today; one member of his party nabbed a Tarpon weighing over 130 pounds.

Good anglin',

Captain Chris Garcia
