KEY WEST FISHING REPORT - June 11th 2010

The light tackle angling here in Key West, Florida, has been excellent of late. We have been sending group after group out to the southern reef to take full advantage of the Snapper spawns. Both Yellowtail Snapper and Mutton Snapper are extremely active this time of year. And the great thing about these different species is that they bite at different points in the day. The Yellowtails are most active in the mornings while Mutton Snapper begin to bite after three in the afternoon and can be caught through the early evening. Lately, our clients have been pulling in some five-pound Yellowtail Snapper, a great size for these delicious game fish. After arriving at the reef in one of our sleek center-console vessels, our captains chum the water to draw the Snapper towards the boat. These excellent sport fish hit cut bait on light tackle spinning rods.

Another popular light-tackle quarry for Key West anglers is Tarpon. These large fish always put up a challenging fight after you set the hook.  Our charter clients have been landing four to six Tarpon on each half-day excursion.

Good anglin',

Capt. Chris Garcia
