Key West Fly Fishing

Key West Fly Fishing

Key West fly fishing is one thing you won’t want to miss if you’re here on vacation and you like to fish. Considered a specialty of many top guides in the area, Key West fly fishing is one of the most popular types of sport fishing in the Keys and especially Key West. With miles and miles of flats around our tiny island and beyond, Key West fly fishing guides have lots of area to choose from when it comes to getting those tarpon, permit, bonefish or snook.

If you’ve never fly fished before, don’t worry. Tour Key West fly fishing guide will help you with all the gear and techniques like fly casting and fly tying patters. Learn about flies that act like a poppers, streamers (which are supposed to look like minnows) and other fly patterns designed to fool the fish. You will learn how to cast and maneuver the fly so that it looks enough like a real surface fish that your target will eat it.

Your Key West fly fishing guide will know how the tide affects the fish up on the flats, just one of the ways in which you will benefit from their experience and passion for Key Wet fly fishing. Booking a Key West fly fishing charter for your Key West fishing vacation guarantees a great day fishing out on the water. And hey, you will probably learn some valuable tips from your guide as well.

Key West Bone Fishing

Key West Bone Fishing

Key West bone fishing is done on the flats from a small, shallow-draft flats boat. Most Key West fishing guides will whisk their customers out the back country for flats fishing, as this is where most of the flats are in this area. They either travel north, northeast or west for the best Key West bone fishing territory. If you go south of Key West, it’s patch reefs, Hawk’s Channel, deeper water, and the reef. The flats south of Key West just aren’t there. Fishing Dry Tortugas is another option for flats fishing out of Key West.

Bone fish like to feed in such shallow water, they become visible to the naked eye if you can elevate yourself a bit. You’ll see that flats boats have a perch above the engine, where your guide can stand and look for bonefish, and also get good leverage to push the boat along with a pole. The large platform at the bow of a flats boat is also good for standing and looking for bone fish. Key West bone fishing will take you into water that’s sometimes as shallow as six inches! The guide will cut the engine, trim it up, and propel the boat by poling silently through the extremely shallow water. Key West flats fishing can be done with fly tackle spinning reel tackle.

Captains Write Key West Fishing Reports

Can’t get to Key West for some awesome flats fishing or offshore trips? One way to keep up with what’s going on and satisfy that relentless urge to fish is to read a Key West fishing report. That’s right, not only do our top guides take passengers out to excellent fishing grounds, but after they get home they sit down at the computer and write up a fishing report. Or heck, it sure is a great way to pass time…reading about sport fishing under the Florida sun, catching fish like tarpon, grouper, marlin, bonefish… you name it, you dream it!

So, whether you’re still in dream mode or the planning stages of your Key West vacation, or even if you’re already here and you’re just getting ready for your day of Key West fishing, a Key West fishing report can be useful, entertaining, or both! See how the boats have been doing for your targeted species. Come to Key West for some Key West tuna fishing? Check out our offshore fishing guides’ reports. They will fill you in on details that matter, like what the Gulf Stream looks like that day, how “dirty” the water is, what depths the big fish are hanging out at, and how big the waves are.
