Yellow Jacks
About the Fish
The Yellow Jack can be distinguished from other jacks in the length of the jaw, as well as the counts of the rays in the fins. It is a relatively big fish growing up to 33 inches, and weigh up to 30 pounds. They always travel in schools and are rarely seen as singles.
Seasons
They are available year round, but are not very common or predictable. They just seem to show up at any time.
Where to Catch Them
They seem to enjoy small cuts and channels. They also favor underwater structures, coral heads, or sponge gardens. They will always seem to be near a steady food source.
How/ Techniques to Catch Them
They respond well to any live bait fish, shrimp, jig or plugs. They are very fast swimmers and a fast retrieve of a crank bait will really light them up.
Equipment Used to catch them
A 10 -15 pound spin outfit will match this fish well in Key West. The Fly rod should be an 8 weight with a 20 pound leader. Any baitfish pattern will work, and top water poppers are a great visual blast.
