KEY WEST FISHING REPORT - February 5th 2010
The weather hasn't been too cooperative for offshore fishing on the Atlantic side of Key West lately with winds blowing out of the southwest at speeds of thirty knots, but our charter captains have seen some great success sticking close to the coast and fishing for sharks with Light Tackle.
Our own Captain Bill of the Outcast guided his clients to fish for sharks on the Gulf side of Key West on had quite an outstanding day on Friday. Sticking close to shore on the leeward side of a landmass, in this case the island of Key West, can prevent anglers from being battered by high winds and rough surf. Seeing calmer waters on the leeward side, Captain Bill decided to take his clients for some light tackle fishing in four to six feet of water. His anglers managed an unbelievable twenty-one for twenty-seven day catching sharks, including Bull Sharks, Lemon Sharks and Blacktips. The largest Bull Shark weighed around one hundred and thirty pounds. The biggest Blacktip tipped the scales at one hundred and forty pounds. The top Lemon shark was the catch of the day, weighing two hundred and twenty pounds.
The winds will remain strong out of the south over the weekend, but the shark fishing should continue to be red hot. If you are in South Florida for the Super Bowl, stick around after the weekend because the winds should shift on Monday, allowing for Deep Sea Fishing on the Atlantic side for pelagic like Sailfish and Blackfin Tuna.
We look forward to seeing you in the Keys,
Captain Chris Garcia
