KEY WEST FISHING REPORT - May 4th 2010
This was an excellent day to fish offshore on the Atlantic side of Key West. Aboard the Coolcast, I transported a party down to the Gulf Stream in the morning. This afternoon I took a second charter out for some deepwater wreck fishing. The morning charter was a successful excursion, nabbing Sailfish, King Mackerel on live Herring. In two hundred and thirty feet of water, we trolled with ballyhoo beneath a spot where a frigate bird was fishing for feeder fish; my anglers managed to hook a 27-pound male Mahi as well as a 22-pound female. Sailfish angling has been great recently and should continue to be so for at least another month. The Mahi Mahi is just starting to peak; this is a great time of year to catch both Sailfish and Mahi Mahi off the Florida Keys.
In the afternoon, I guided a group out to some deepwater wrecks. The anglers hooked Amberjack, Snapper, and a 28-pound Black Grouper, while jigging with butterflies. On Wednesday, I'm leading a charter into the Gulf of Mexico to hunt for Permit at wreck sites.
Good anglin',
Capt. Damon Santelli
